What is the relationship between collectivity and careerism in the art world today?

I don’t believe in originality, but I believe in citation. Citation creates a connection, a conversation, a collective aim. Sharing: nurturing an idea tenderly. Lifting is immaterial; it’s a digital maneuver that doesn’t show the scarred roots.

What is the difference between community and networking?

We meet in the streets in between the impersonal sharing of pictures of our pets, meals, and Sundays. In the streets I witness the staging of dissent. Posturing towards someone else’s potential. Selfie-radicalism: I was there. Selfie-spirituality: I transcended the medium. Selfie-feminism: I am sexy.

What the difference between being profoundly annoyed and radically enraged?

A friend told me he couldn’t handle being around his roommate. I asked if it was because he was writing his dissertation. “No,” he said. “No, I am upset that we never talk about state violence. If that’s not the starting point, something is wrong.” That makes sense.

Where does the individual stop and the movement begin?

Two sets of eyes an ocean apart. We walk behind one to demand the state stops brutality. World leaders mirror the gesture in order to justify the same thing.

Anti-police violence protest, New York, America - 13 Dec 2014

People hold panels to create the eyes of late Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier, known as "Charb", as hundreds of thousands of French citizens take part in a solidarity march (Marche Republicaine) in the streets of Paris

How does anger make itself visible?

Anger doesn’t give a shit about aspect ratio. Anger that doesn’t care if you say it in comic sans. Or where you went to school. Or what you ate for breakfast. Anger doesn’t dismiss aesthetics, it demands more. It resurrects the dead and shows us the future.

Where do we go from here?

This is the post-and pre-hiatus issue. There is a generational shift. RECAPS began shortly after the Occupy camps fell down like dominos reaching from coast to coast. A new movement has emerged, young people mashing up reverence and rebellion. The reworking of culture required to echo their chants requires is a project I am eager to participate in. These questions will catch up with us again, in the meantime, got to run.
